Office of Research
Loretta Cordova de Ortega, M.D., Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, has announced the appointment of Stuart S. Winter, M.D. as Vice Chair for Research for the Department of Pediatrics commencing April 15, 2011. The creation of the Vice Chair of Research position is critical for the Department in moving forward in our Research mission; Dr. Winter has a strong vision and the drive to lead this program.
Dr. Winter joined Pediatric faculty with the division of Hematology and Oncology in 1995 as an Assistant Professor, he achieved the rank of Professor with Tenure in 2007. Dr. Winter has served as Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. Throughout his career, Dr. Winter has made research a priority and has enjoyed a long collaborative history with the Children's Oncology Group. His research has focused on the goal of improving the outcome for children being treated for precursor-B and T-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
As Vice Chair of Research, Dr. Winter will construct a coherent research vision for the Department, develop an administrative infrastructure that allows for increased research opportunities for all faculty, and recruit new faculty to contribute to the research needs of New Mexican children. Through these and other efforts already underway in the UNM Health Sciences Center, we hope to create a brighter future for the children of New Mexico and around the world.
Office of Creative Endeavors
The Office of Creative Endeavors, Department of Pediatrics, promotes research and creative activities for the department by providing assistance in grant development, and submission and provides support to the department's research committee.
In 1993, a steering committee from the Department of Pediatrics, along with the support of the Chair, Dr. Shirley Murphy, directed the development of the Office of Creative Endeavors. The primary objective of the newly formed office was to assist members of the Department in pursuit of potentially creative activities, especially individual and collaborative research projects. With continued support from Dr. Robert Katz, Chair, and with guidance from Dr. Sally Davis and the Pediatric Research Committee, the office has continued to evolve, developing a Strategic Plan for Research in February 1999.
The Office of Creative Endeavors solicited, received, and completed a wide variety of tasks from Pediatrics faculty, staff, and residents.
- Grants and Contracts
- The office offers support to the Pediatric Research Committee. The committee meets once each month.
- The office displayed an ongoing series of posters to showcase faculty and housestaff research on the Creative Endeavors bulletin board in the department.
- Hired Mark Eichinger, Ph.D., as the Research Coordinator for the department.
- Sally Davis, Ph.D., Chair of the Pediatric Department Research Committee, serves on the Dean's Science Advisory Council (SAC)
