The Division of Neonatology is composed of an integrated team of specialists that provide compassionate, evidence-based care for critically ill newborns from around the great state of New Mexico and neighboring states. The state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UNM encompasses 52 beds, with an additional 12 intermediate care nursery beds.
Since its inception in 1971, the NICU at UNM's Children's Hospital has been committed to providing the best care newborns and their families can have.

Our specialized group of Neonatologists offers phone-consultation and transport from all areas of New Mexico and neighboring states. We provide our out-of-area families with accommodations at Casa Esperanza, the Ronald McDonald House, or family rooms available in the NICU. Also available are breast-pumping rooms, isolation rooms and pre-discharge family rooms.
We offer premier prenatal consultation and support, partnered with Maternal-Fetal-Medicine, genetic counselors and Pediatric sub-specialists, as we understand that having a baby who will require special medical attention can be stressful. Special Delivery Program

As a leading Academic center we provide education to Medical Students, Pediatric and Family Medicine residents, neonatal nurse-practitioners-in-training and are the only ACGME Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Training Program in the State.
