Didactic and Interactive EducationIn order to insure the quality and breadth of our educational program, we have developed a comprehensive three-year curriculum of interactive and didactic learning experiences. We are dedicated to the comprehensive development of our housestaff in all aspects of the art and science of pediatrics, and we feel that the breadth and depth of our curriculum accurately reflects this commitment.

Thursday School: Didactic and interactive education is a key component of any residency training program. In 2009, our residents developed a proposal to shift from the traditional Noon Conference didactics to a 1/2 day block. We worked together to design and implement our innovative Resident School on Thursday afternoons. Each Thursday afternoon, every single resident who is not post-call or on an away elective is freed of all clinical responsibilities, and the entire group comes together for lectures, small-group activities, hands-on patient simulation, boards review and other educational experiences. The focus is on collaborative, adult learning, and we do everything to guarantee that resident education takes precedence. We even answer your pages, freeing you to focus on the learning at hand. Our curriculum is created and monitored by a committee that includes program leadership, faculty and residents. In addition to focusing on teaching on clinical topics crucial to becoming a great pediatrician, unique aspects of our curriculum include:

Board Prep: Starting in July of the third year, residents work with a learning specialist to develop a personalized board prep strategy. This allows the resident to target areas of personal perceived weakness and focus on topics of high weight on the board exam.  The residents can then purposefully plan to incorporate this into their existing schedule. Starting in January, the third-year residents participate in a longitudinal board preparation curriculum that is based on a flipped classroom model.  Additionally, all of our residents receive board prep materials in their intern year, complete board prep questions annually and receive didactics with a board focus that incorporate audience response to board style questions

Evidence Based Medicine Journal Club: Held every other month.  It includes an interactive team based flipped classroom model that teaches residents how to read and interpret the literature using a structured methodology in a way that is effective and not intimidating. Armed with this expertise, housestaff then address practical clinical questions of significance to them using the best available evidence, and present their findings to their peers.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference: Held monthly, housestaff and faculty participate in this multi-disciplinary conference which includes pediatrics, surgery, ICU staff, pathology and radiology. Interesting cases, deaths and unusual diagnoses are discussed.

Ethical Dilemmas and Tough Cases: As pediatricians, we see not only lots of joy, but also sorrow, sadness, and death and dying. To help us all address these tough cases and ethical dilemmas, we hold regular meetings to discuss the human issues affecting patients, families and housestaff in a supportive, open, and honest forum with faculty specializing in ethics, death, and dying.

Morning Report: Occurring every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, this informal and interactive conference utilizes cases to help strengthen skills in differential diagnosis and management of both common and rare pediatric issues. The atmosphere is fun and collegial, and involves students, housestaff, and faculty.

Grand Rounds: Thursday at noon is reserved for this conference which utilizes both local experts and national speakers who present state-of-the-art updates on topics ranging from molecular biology, to community advocacy, to violence in the media. Lunch is provided by the Department of Pediatrics.

Outpatient Morning Conference: Daily, except Tuesday and Wednesday , faculty and residents working in the Urgent Care Clinic gather to spend an hour in interactive discussion of issues relating to ambulatory pediatrics. Topics include common infections, child behavior issues, common procedures, and time at the BATCAVE Simulation Lab.

Radiology Rounds: Residents round daily with our pediatric radiologists during their inpatient experiences. All new studies are reviewed and interpretation is discussed. We have a fully integrated computerized radiology system, enabling the viewing of radiologic studies from anywhere in the hospital.

Ethics: The UNM Health Sciences Center has an online curriculum for housestaff to help address learning needs in the realm of ethics. Additional ethics information may be found at: http://hscethics.unm.edu/index.html. Further, there are regular ethics seminars available to any and all interested in further exploring this essential domain of medicine.
